The original Oldsmobile Silhouette was weird, quirky, and bizarre. It was also the original luxury minivan, and today I'm reviewing the Silhouette to show you what it was like. I am also going to show you the quirks and features of the Silhouette, and I will show you how the Oldsmobile Silhouette drives.

If I were to list my favorite reviews, it would include the Vector W8 and this - the 1996 Oldsmobile Silhouette. It would be the only list, ever, that includes both the Vector W8 and the 1996 Oldsmobile Silhouette.

You forgot the air ride self leveling on board air pump. The one where the switch controlling the height was prone to falling off resulting in a jacked up rear end until you taped the switch back into position. We had the TranSport, Pontiacs version. 1992 version, and had the 3.8 woohoo. We loved it and put over 160,000 on it with no major issues raising 4 kids. Pontiac’s version was basically plastic and never had issues with door, dings and rust.

My neighbour back in the late 80's lived in Canada for a few years but returned to UK with a later model Pontiac TransSport in the early 90's and imported their mini van to the UK. As far as I know the only one in the UK. Looked futuristic till the '96 Renault Espace came along.

Doug: the europeans MPV VW Sharan/Seat Alhambra/Ford Galaxy had this kind of child's integrated seat, in their first generation. I had one and this kind of integrated seat is great.

This is actually my first car at the moment! My parents had this minivan, and when they got another car the Silhouette was and still is my daily driver. Never thought an old hand me down minivan would be rare, or of any interest to Doug for that matter.

12:10 I hated being in the back seat of vans with those windows that barely opened, my grandma had a early 2000's Town and Country and the center windows didn't even pop out, to make things worst, the trim level she got of it didn't have any vents in the back. I would occasionally have to ask her to turn the air conditioner up and you couldn't even roll them down on a nice day, I hated it. Thankfully my immediant family had vehicles with windows that would roll down on all doors.

I actually like the dustbuster look better than the way modern minivans look, I like how sleek they looked. I'm kind of surprised they didn't rebadge that into a Saturn van as well. The front is extremely Saturn like.

I owned a 90 and 94 (I think). Weird yes but practical. Got 28mph highway mileage and accelerated fine because super light. Body panels were plastic. Living in Ohio, they didn’t rust from road salt. Row 2&3 seat backs folded forward flat. Could carry a sheet of plywood on them. Seats were light and came in and out easy. I have two Honda Odysseys and 2nd row seats are heavy beasts with levers and cables that have required repair. Notice the roof rack in the video, stuck removed seats in car top carrier occasionally. Of course, Odyssey is far superior!

i had one of these around 2004-2005.i was driving home on the highway one day and out of nowhere the front end dropped about 6 inches and i lost all steering.. i thought i hit a severe pothole or something but i looked and there was no pothole..was going about 55 when it happened and i almost lost control but thankfully was able to coast it into a ditch sorta safely. i knew nothing about cars at the time so i tried to sell it as is.. nobody wanted it. ended up scrapping it for $70, anyways thats all i got

You mention the long sloping nose, which is something the Renault Espace (basically the OG Euro MPV) had for almost all of it's life. From inception as the Matra P18 project rip-off of the Dodge T-118 prototype, which would become the Dodge Caravan, until it's latest facelift in 2015. As for luxury, there has never really been anything that could compete with the Renault Grand Espace Initiale Paris.

The "Snout Van": I had the '94 Pontiac Tran Sport version of this van back in the late '90s. I've owned many vehicles from Alfa Romeos to BMWs to Lexus to Mercedes to Mustang GT. This van was my favorite vehicle by far. With the 3800 engine it was no dog. I took all the seats out of the back and used it for hauling cargo around for my pizza shop. I would click open the automatic sliding door as I walked to the vehicle, enter by that door then walk up to my Captain's chair, click the button to close the door, put on my sunglasses then motor off. It was a cool way to enter a vehicle. The dashboard was as big as an executive office desk. If I had a pizza delivery to take the dashboard could hold three different pizza deliveries - all of them large pies.

I owned a 93 Lumina APV back in the 90s, I actually liked having a a non cookie cutter Van, Surprising I got used to the long dash view easily and could fit it thru tight spaces without scraping anything. Aerodynamic? I was driving downhill on the highway, looked at the speed; the needle was out of sight.... didnt seem that fast, smooth and quiet (relatively). Working on it? A Nighthmare. I replaced the 3.1l engine myself in my garage, not something I would do again, used a video cam to document what went where. If it was built better I would get another one - I liked the Silhouette front end better though.

There’s one thing you missed about this dust buster minivans... I wear polarized shades when I drive. I could see through glass glare of windshield from all cars but not this one! Windshield has some kind of glass coating that’s different from any other cars (at least back in 90s) and I couldn’t see through the windshield of the Dustbuster.
